History of Dublin

Dublin, Ohio was founded by an Irish man who decided to name the city after his hometown, Dublin, Ireland. Irish culture has been a large part of this Ohio city’s identity ever since then. It is now home to one of the biggest Irish festivals in the country, the Dublin Irish Festival. About 14 percent of the population is of Irish descent. Though most of the founders and early settlers happened to be German. 

Dublin was at one point a farming community. Many of the town’s businesses at the time were there to support the farmers. Tavern’s were also a large source of the town’s income. They aimed to profit off of travelers moving through the town. Stone Quarrying, the act of mining construction rocks, also became a big business in the town. It involves drilling holes into the earth and placing explosives into them. This is done inside of mines and caves, and can be set to blast a few times a week or even once a day. 

Dublin became known as a rough and poor farming town. It was so rough at the time, there was even a popular refrain about it chanted in bars throughout the town. It went:

Dublin, city of beautiful roses,

Gouged-out eyes and bloody noses

If it weren’t for the solid rock foundation

It’d be gone to hell and damnation!

The city’s reputation has turned around immensely since then! Dublin eventually transformed into a suburban business center. Ashland Chemical Company played a large role in this change. It moved a building into Dublin and pushed the city into a different trajectory. Dublin was declared a city in 1987 once it achieved a certain level of growth. The city has managed to preserve its past throughout its tremendous growth. Lots of 19th century architecture has been very well preserved. Many of Dublin’s oldest buildings are listed in the National Register of historic Places, the official list of places worthy of preservation throughout our nation.

Dublin has a population of over 47,000. The population has grown exponentially from just 681 in 1970. The average Dublin resident is 36 to 45 years of age. Most of them are married and have young children in their households. There is an average of 15,000 households with about 2.8 people per household. The average resident is also employed in one of a number of different professions.

Over 73% of Hebron's residents are white. Around 19% of the population is of Asian descent. Around 2% of the population is African American. And about 3% of the population is of mixed race. The median house price in Dublin is 334,000. In Hebron, 43% of households are occupied by married couples. Around 31% of those homes are made up of individuals. The median household income in Dublin is about 117,000. It is a prosperous town whose residents live comfortably.

Dublin is known to have amazing schools. The Dublin City School District has three high schools, four middle schools, and fourteen elementary schools. Their schools have a total enrollment of 13,000 students. Dublin has two private schools as well. Five colleges also have branches right in Dublin. Columbus Metropolitan Library even has a branch right in Dublin, aside from the two other libraries there.
