History of Pickerington

Pickerington is named after Abraham Pickering, who was originally from Virginia. He was able to purchase some land from his father-in-law, James Looker, and moved out to what is now Pickerington with his new bride, Ann. He found the climate of central Ohio very suitable for farming, although it was still sparsely populated and development was just starting to get underway.

The town continued to prosper as an agricultural hub and benefited greatly from its proximity to Columbus and Lancaster. After the War of 1812 was over, Pickering decided to name his quaint village after the hero of that war, Andrew Jackson. It was known as Jacksonville until 1827 when the citizens decided to change the name to honor the original founder and benefactor. It was incorporated as the City of Pickerington in 1991, and has continued to grow to a population of roughly 18,291 at the 2010 census.
