New Premieres, Old Favorites, Limited Series - No Matter What You're Looking For Showtime Has Something For You
The 2019-2020 TV season is upon us. It is that time of year where you get to snuggle up on the couch knowing there is something great for you to watch each night of the week. Dozens of networks are shelling out dozens of new TV shows and premiering new seasons of recurring shows. Between major networks, streaming platforms, and premium channels there are a million different shows and so many different ways to consume them. With that many options, it can be difficult to know which shows you should give a try and which shows you should pass on.
Showtime is one of the premium networks that has taken over the television industry. A few years ago, channels like Showtime and HBO were only home to documentaries, movies, and limited series. They weren’t making TV like other networks. Today, these premium networks are home to some of the world's biggest shows. When looking for good TV this season, Showtime has a lot of great ones to offer. I’ve compiled a list of all the network’s greatest hits that will be running this Winter. It consists of old favorites you have to watch before they end, limited docuseries that look into the world's most interesting topics, and brand new shows that are sure to be hits. No matter what your taste, this list is sure to have something you love.
Homeland
Season Premiere on February 9, 2020
If you haven’t already watched this American thriller, now is the perfect time to start. The eighth and final season is scheduled to premiere this fall. The story follows Marine Sgt. Nicholas Brody as he returns home after eight years of captivity. CIA agent Carrie Mathison(Claire Danes) is top in her field despite being bipolar, which makes her volatile and unpredictable. With the help of her long-time mentor, Carrie fearlessly risks everything, including her personal well-being and even sanity, at every turn. Carrie thinks Brody has turned and is connected to a terror plot to be carried out on American soil. She engages him in a dangerous game of cat and mouse that puts America's national security at risk. You won’t be able to take your eyes off the screen once you start this show. The twelve-episode final season airs this February on Showtime.
Ray Donovan
Season Premiere on November 17th, 2019
Another classic show with a cult following is Ray Donovan. Ray Donovan is a "fixer" for Hollywood's elite. He is the go-to guy that the city's celebrities, athletes and business moguls call to make their problems disappear. We see Ray navigate his haunting past as a ruthless South Boston thug. Ray’s father returns after twenty years in prison to reconnect and settle old scores with his family -- including Ray's wife and kids, who have never met the family's patriarch and are anxious to get to know him -- threatens to destroy everything Ray has built for himself. Returning for its seventh season this fall, Ray Donovan is perfect if you're looking for a show to binge.
Billions
Season Premiere TBD
Compared to the shows listed so far, this one is fairly new. That being said it has had a very successful four seasons on the network. Paul Giamatti and Damian Lewis star in a complex drama about power politics in the world of New York high finance. Shrewd, savvy U.S. Attorney Chuck Rhoades (Giamatti) and the brilliant, ambitious hedge fund king Bobby "Axe" Axelrod each use all of their considerable smarts, power and influence to outmaneuver the other. The stakes are in the billions in this timely, provocative series. This one is just downright addictive. It is truly a show with the highest of highs and the lowest of lows. The fifth season is set to air in early 2020.
On Becoming a God in Central Florida
Series Premiere on August 25, 2019
This brand new series is already a hit! This dark comedy starring award-winning actress Kirsten Dunst takes place in a small town that is adjacent to Orlando in the early 1990s. Dunst plays Krystal Stubbs, a minimum wage employee at a waterpark who is looking for a better life. To reach her goal, she lies, cheats and cons her way up the ranks of Founders American Merchandise (FAM), a cultish pyramid scheme that ruined her family in the first place. The deeper she goes the more seriously it begins to affect everyone that is close to her. This series is sure to draw you in instantly. Stream or watch the first season live on Showtime.
Penny Dreadful: City of Angels
Series Premiere TBD
This one is highly anticipated by all fans of its parent show ‘Penny Dreadful’. Showtime's Gothic horror drama is being reanimated — in spirit. John Logan, the creator, writer, and executive producer of Penny Dreadful is returning to old haunts with Penny Dreadful: City of Angels. The series is being billed as a so-called "spiritual descendant" of the original drama, which wrapped after three seasons in 2016. The next chapter in the Penny Dreadful story trades the seedy supernatural underworld of Victorian England for the seedy supernatural underworld of 1938 Los Angeles. When a grisly murder shocks the city, Detective Tiago Vega is embroiled in an epic story that reflects the rich history of Los Angeles. Before long, Tiago and his family are grappling with powerful forces that threaten to tear them apart. The show’s premiere date has yet to be announced.
Desus & Mero
Season Premiere on Oct 14th, 2019.
This is the only show of its kind on the list. Comedy duo Desus Nice and The Kid Mero have gained a loyal following with their "Bodega Boys" podcast, and now the Bronx-bred buds bring their thoughts on current events to TV. This show originally aired on Viceland and now has switched to Showtime. Premiering this fall every nightly at 11 pm, Desus & Mero host the greatest show in late-night history, featuring only illustrious guests.
Kidding
Season Premiere on February 9th, 2020.
This show follows Jeff Pickles, a man who is iconic in children's television. Jeff, aka Mr. Pickles, is a pillar of kindness and wisdom to the impressionable minds of America's youth and to the parents who grew up with him. When Mr. Pickles' family begins to implode, his life starts to take a downward spiral. He must put the fables and puppets aside to get through this newest crisis in life. As the slow leak of sanity advances faster than he can cope with it, the cruel world breaks his heart. Jim Carey stars in his first series regular role in over two decades. This heartwarming comedy will knock your socks off with laughter.
Shameless
Season Premiere on November 10th, 2019.
This series is by far the most popular on the list. If you haven’t heard about it, there is a good chance you’ve been living under a rock. This show has captured the hearts of people all around the world. Although heartwarming is not the word I would use to describe this show. William H. Macy and Emmy Rossum star in this fiercely engaging and fearlessly twisted series. Chicagoan Frank Gallagher is the proud single dad of six smart, industrious, independent kids, who without him would be...perhaps better off. When Frank's not at the bar spending what little money they have, he's passed out on the floor. But the kids have found ways to grow up in spite of him. They may not be like any family you know, but they make no apologies for being exactly who they are. The show is returning in November with a remarkable tenth season. The tenth season is the first season without lead character, Fiona Gallagher. Emmy Rossum ended the ninth season with an emotional goodbye to the rest of the family. The renewal of the 10th season makes it Showtime’s longest-running series to date. If you haven't yet seen this show, you can binge it on Netflix from start to finish.
