It’s time. Finally, you get to spruce up your bathroom. I’m sure other areas of the house could be upgrades but why not spend time on one of the areas you use the most?

The bathroom has great functionality. But it’s also so much more. It’s an area where you get refreshed or give yourself that Oscar-worthy speech about not giving up. Just because it's a functional space doesn't mean it can't be beautiful or make a fun statement.

And like other rooms, bathrooms styles change. They can tell you a lot about a person. Bathrooms can be posh and regal or clean and modern. Whatever you want your bathroom to say about you, here are some popular trends of the year to help you achieve it.

1. Make Your Mark

Out with the boring because statement pieces are in. Whether a patterned vanity, a statement painting, or an eccentric wall, statement pieces are the new buzz. Your statement piece is a chance for you to say a lot. You could choose from florals. modern art, or bright colors. What's your style?

Wallpaper is definitely not a thing of the past. Wallpaper on the market today is easier to install and lasts up to five times longer than a coat of paint. There are a multitude of patterns and textures to choose from. Use wallpaper for a statement wall or make all of the walls a statement wall. Still not buying wallpaper? Consider using tiles to make a statement wall as well.

2. Wet Rooms

If your bathroom upgrade requires working with an awkward amount of space or you'd like a luxurious bathing solution, the wet room is the answer. Wet rooms are simple in that they just require tiling all around. There's no need for large lunky tubs or tiny showers if there is little room. The slightly slanted floor will make clean up easy. Wet rooms give the bathroom an open and seamless look.

This style is modern and brings an open concept idea into the bathroom. Tiles can be found for cheap and come in a multitude of shapes and sizes, making customization easy. They make the bathroom look larger and give you a luxurious, spa-like feel.

3. Glass Doors

If you want to continue the luxurious feeling in your wet room or want to upgrade your shower, trimless glass doors are the solution. Floor-to-ceiling glass doors instantly make your shower look longer and give a modern, clean look. If you're looking to keep the modern and spa-like feel, this is the trend for you.

4. Wall Mounted Everything

On the market today, you can find wall-mounted toilets, vanities, faucets, and even storage solutions. If you aren't an accent wall or statement art piece type of person, a wall-mounted vanity or faucet can become the focal point of your bathroom. With hundreds of unique designs to choose from, you can choose a striking piece of hardware that suits you.

If you're a fan of a modern look or even enjoy a futuristic look, this trend is for you. Wall-mounted hardware elevates a bathroom, quite literally.

Marble can be used as the statement piece or as an accent. The cost can be pricey so a cheaper option may be using marble tiles or wallpaper.

With so many options, it will be hard to choose from elegant, ornate fixtures to a large, bold mirror to bring a pop of color. Whatever statement you want to express, say it with the mirror.

There are two main metals making a comeback: dark matte metals and brass. Some bathrooms mix the two, while others stick to one or the other. Using metals gets a sleek and sexy vibe to the room and mixing the two metals can draw visual interest. Elevate your bathroom with small metal pieces like the faucet or go even bigger with mirrors or the vanity. Even just a tad bit of metal goes a long way.
